Study of Vitamin D and Magnesium Levels in Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients in India

Introduction: The global burden of Diabetes Mellitus is huge. This research was undertaken with an aim to study the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency and Magnesium deficiency and their relation with insulin resistance and insulin secretion defect in newly diagnosed Type 2 DM patients. Materials and methods: This was a hospital based cross-sectional comparative study on newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients done over 18 months. Data was analysed using SPSS 21.0. Descriptive and Bivariate Analysis were used. P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D deficiency was found to be more prevalent in new onset Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus group. 19.17% cases had preclinical hypomagnesaemia.
